  • Shop Local, Think Local

Our community is pretty fantastic and that includes our retailers - we think one of the most important things you can do is shop and support local business! Shopping locally offers a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond mere transactions. The impact on the community's economy is substantial; when money circulates within local businesses, it supports not only business owners but also their employees and the broader community. This economic support creates a ripple effect that boosts prosperity and quality of life for everyone involved. Of every dollar spent locally, about 70% stays local! Our local businesses contribute to the cultural fabric of our communities. They often showcase products that reflect local creativity, history, and traditions, offering consumers the opportunity to connect with their community's unique identity. By supporting these businesses, shoppers not only acquire goods but also help preserve and promote the local culture and heritage. One of the amazing things we’ve seen in the Wellington North community is our retailers working together and supporting each other to create an environment of mutual success, both at local events and on social media. Sterre Cafe & Gifts and Arthur Greenhouse recently hosted Business After 5 networking events that brought local business owners together to share challenges and ideas. The owners of Silver Fox Distillery have helped to raise thousands of dollars for children's hospitals. Copernicus Educational Products and Walker Industries encourage and support staff who volunteer at town events, town gardens, and the food bank. International corporations that have found a home in Wellington North, such as Musashi Auto Parts, have donated to our local food banks and opened community gardens. In Mount Forest we’ve seen the new Yellow Brick Guest House use and promote products from many local retailers such as Plumes Interiors, The Eco Den, Arthur Cash & Carry, Country Carpet & Furniture, Mount Forest Thrift Store, McDonalds Home Appliances and many more. Those retailers in turn have promoted the new guest house and were instrumental in making it a success. Events like the Mount Forest Fireworks Festival and the Canada Day market and celebrations in Arthur wouldn’t be possible without the support and generosity of our local businesses that are too numerous to mention. It really does take a village! Shopping locally is not just about buying goods; it's about investing in the vitality of your community. It strengthens economic resilience, fosters meaningful connections, promotes sustainability, and celebrates local culture—all of which contribute to a more vibrant and cohesive community experience. We know this is just a tiny snapshot of all the great things our local businesses are doing for the community and we are sure to have missed many amazing local business stories. We would love to hear from you and share your local business story on the online guide by emailing us at info@wncg.ca !

  • The Importance of Volunteering: Strengthening Small Towns Like Wellington North

Volunteering plays a crucial role in fostering community spirit, strengthening local networks, and enhancing the quality of life in any town. In small communities like those within the Township of Wellington North, Ontario, volunteering is especially important as it contributes directly to the well-being and sustainability of the region. Here’s why volunteering is essential and how it benefits both individuals and the community as a whole. Mount Forest Lions Club and Arthur Lions Club volunteers hard at work to better our community! Building Stronger Communities In small towns, community members often rely on each other to maintain essential services, host events, and support local initiatives. Volunteers are the backbone of many organizations, from food banks and libraries to local sports leagues and cultural events. Without volunteers, many of these programs would struggle to operate, reducing the opportunities available for residents of all ages. Wellington North, which includes towns like Arthur and Mount Forest, thrives on community-driven efforts. Events such as the Mount Forest Fireworks Festival and the Arthur Fall Fair rely heavily on volunteers to coordinate activities, manage logistics, and ensure that these traditions continue to bring people together. Enhancing Local Services and Support Networks Small towns may not have the same level of government or corporate funding as larger cities, making volunteer-run initiatives even more critical. Organizations such as food banks, senior support services, and youth programs depend on local residents to donate their time and skills. By volunteering, community members help maintain vital services that might otherwise be inaccessible or underfunded. For example, organizations like the Mount Forest Community Pantry and the Arthur Food Bank provide essential food support to families in need. Volunteers play a key role in sorting donations, distributing goods, and fundraising to keep these services running. Creating a Sense of Belonging and Purpose One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering is the sense of belonging it fosters. In a small town, knowing your neighbors and working alongside them to improve the community creates strong social ties. These connections not only combat isolation but also contribute to the overall well-being of individuals, fostering a supportive and welcoming environment for all. Volunteering is also an excellent way for new residents to integrate into the community. By getting involved in local events or nonprofit organizations, newcomers can quickly build friendships and develop a deeper understanding of the town’s culture and traditions. Developing Skills and Experience Whether you're a student looking for hands-on experience, a professional wanting to give back, or a retiree eager to stay active, volunteering provides valuable opportunities for personal growth. Many organizations offer training, leadership opportunities, and skill development, making volunteering a great way to enhance a resume or explore new interests. For young people in Wellington North, volunteering can be a stepping stone to future employment or post-secondary education. Many scholarships and job applications value community involvement, recognizing the leadership and commitment it demonstrates. Making a Lasting Impact Every act of volunteerism contributes to the long-term success of a town. Whether it’s preserving historical landmarks, mentoring youth, or organizing community cleanups, these efforts shape the town’s future. By dedicating even a small amount of time, volunteers help ensure that Wellington North remains a thriving and resilient community for generations to come. • Featured Community Group: Arthur Opti-Mrs Club

The Arthur Opti-Mrs Club is a Women’s service club that was established over 50 years ago!  The group was founded by some of the wives of the Men’s Optimist club in 1972. The Opti-Mrs primary goal is to offer support to youth and other groups in our community that could benefit from assistance.   This support is sent out in the form of organized events and donations (not limited to) schools, sports groups, the food bank, local not-for-profit events, and larger community initiatives. The primary source of revenue for the Opti-Mrs originally was earned by catering events such as Christmas dinners, weddings and bake sales however this has vastly expanded over time.  In more recent years annual fundraising events also include the Christmas Home Tour, a Mothers Day High Tea event in the spring, and weekly Bingo that is held at the Arthur Legion from September to May. The Arthur Opti-Mrs Club is most well known for hosting the town of Arthur’s  Santa Claus Parade , an evening event held on the last Saturday of November each year, a long standing proud tradition for this group. Members of the Opti-Mrs meet the first Wednesday of each month and are always looking for new members! Feel free to reach out on Facebook, attend a weekly Bingo to speak to an Opti-Mrs member in person, or contact President Sharon O’Donnell for details on attending a meeting.
